Being S.M.A.R.T with your new year’s resolution

The year 2020 was a whirlwind. Many of us didn’t expect what happened, what we learnt or how we survived it. From the mountain of problems that caught us by surprise, who would have thought that we could profit and succeed in this environment? In this new year, many of us would like to have a change of heart. We could look at changes in our lifestyles, our diets, our bad habits, our relationships or our work. No matter what your purpose may be, we are here to give you a few pointers that can help you win your 2021 new year’s resolution.

First, our goal is to be smart. In order to attain a possible objective, you must begin by analyzing what you are aiming for and making sure that it is attainable. We will use the S.M.A.R.T technique.

The acronym was coined in the journal Management Review in 1981 for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goal setting. This works for managers but it can also be used for whatever intentions anyone has.

If you are an entrepreneur that wants your business to succeed this year, you can use the acronym as your guide for the decisions you make.
  • Specific – your objective should be clear and detailed.
  • Measurable – you need to determine what would measure your goal’s progress.
  • Achievable – trying to aim for a big step all at once is impossible, so you need to make small baby steps to achieve your goal.
  • Relevant – how important is this goal to you? Does it really matter to you?
  • Timebound – like achievable, the timeline of attaining the goal should be realistic. Set a specific time frame where you possibly like your goal to be achieved.

What’s most important is you are making your new year’s resolution based on what your heart and mind really desires.
