How to deliver your value in the Gig Economy

Gig Economy is gaining popularity as demands increase for this modern work setup. Along with that, the media definition of the gig economy is more than just a part time work, minus the benefits and stability. That is a narrow characterisation of how to understand freelancing. We can start refreshing our perspective in the gig economy by visualising a parent who can spend more time with the family, the free spirit who is no longer chained to the office, or the workaholic who is tired of the wage constraints of their current job.

Of course, risks are always present and the gig economy is not an ideal job but we think that it is important to highlight how an individual who wants to be his own boss opts to make life-changing progress in the freelance sector.

To begin with, working in traditional employment is likely the same as freelancing or starting your own small enterprise – you start from the bottom and hustle your way to the top as time passes by. Now, how can a beginner freelancer deliver their value in the gig economy?

  • Build your reputation – you have to give it your very best shot. Everything must be done in an extra accommodating way to convince a client to take a chance on you and exceed their level of expectations with your projects.
  • Grow Your Skills – always make room for improvement. Understanding which knowledge gaps you need to fill will help you learn how to make your relevant skills transferable to higher paying jobs.
  • Knowing your rights – as a freelancer, there is nothing more important than being able to protect yourself against labour abuses or violations. Knowing your labour rights is a vital aspect of delivering your value in the gig economy.
