How To List Freelance Work On Resume

Does freelancing experience count on a resume?

Gig workers are often confused about including their short term jobs on their resume. The answer, absolutely yes! It is all valuable work experience that recruiters and hiring managers look for.

Still, you should ensure your work experience is matched to the position you are applying for. As an applicant, you should show-off your previous jobs and all your experience to the recruiter.

In this article, we will show how to list your freelance work on a resume.

Start with the most recent

You should insert the current or most recent project in your resume like you would normally do for a ‘regular’ job. Just be clear what position and title you had in that job, and list all the jobs that you did and the experience that you have gained.

Job Title

Sadly, the word “freelancer” often has unfavorable connotations. A job title on CV makes it easier for other people to identify the job and have a brief overview of what you do.

You can type your title in this format: Freelance [insert job here, such as Designer, Virtual Assistant or Writer]

Add section for freelance work

Of course, not all individuals are entirely freelancers. Some have regular jobs and opted to do a few extra gigs. Given this situation, add a standalone section specifically for freelance jobs. List down companies or clients you have worked for and the duration of business you had with them. You can add in your hourly rate, so that companies know what pay you expect.

Exceptions:

Adding your freelance experience can boost your resume however there are few exceptions when not to add the freelance work on your resume.

  1. When you’re not proud or confident of the project you completed.
  2. If you did a gig work for a family member for free (or volunteer work).
  3. When you did one project then figured freelancing wasn’t for you.
  4. When you worked for a client or a company that didn’t want to be named (or talk to that company first before listing it down).
