Rural Work in the Gig Economy

As technology advances, it has become easier to work independently while working from the comfort of our home, but sometimes we want some fresh air, some outdoors and to get away from our homes. The gig economy is the specific trade of short-term services, where there’s a high degree of autonomy, payment is done by task and there’s a short-term relationship between worker and client. This fits into Technology just as it does in fruit picking, wine making and agricultural jobs

Before we understand the status of gig work in rural areas, we must first know the common challenges faced by rural communities in terms of work related problems:

  1. Population Decline / Demographic Changes
  2. Outward Migration of youth
  3. Aging population
  4. Workforce Changes
  5. Lack of living wage employment opportunities for young people

Globalisation, technological advances, and shifting norms and values are reshaping the way we live and work. But little is known about how gig work helps the people in this community survive. As an example, for refugees sent to rural areas of Australia, where housing is plentiful but the jobs are few, online platforms could provide a valuable lifeline. In addition to that, as the gig economy transforms the suburban areas outside of cities become hot spots for freelancers to complete tasks. Hereunder are some of the benefits of being a gig worker in a rural community:

  1. Rural areas provide fewer distractions.
  2. You can experience better work/life balance in rural areas.
  3. Lower cost of living.

Now one of the common misconceptions of having to live in suburban areas is the lack of opportunities however, these days, making a passive income is the norm for millennials. Below are a couple of suggestions for jobs you can do if you decide to live in a rural area:

  1. Manual work such as vehicle mechanics, carpentry and construction
  2. Arts and Crafts and creating traditional home decorations
  3. Farming and seasonal labour
  4. Teaching
  5. Wine making
  6. Driving jobs

Opportunities are everywhere, even in farming communities and places where there is no internet
