Ways to refocus your career when facing a midlife crisis

Are you at a certain age right now where you are experiencing emotional distress? If so, you might be one of those people who are going through a midlife crisis. Signs and symptoms of a midlife crisis can include anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, anger problems, and career or relationship dissatisfaction. Mostly, people in the middle of their lives have already done a lot of living and have years of experience within their professional or personal relationships. We know how exhausting it must be as they begin to transition into the later years of life.

Do not worry though because midlife burnout is extremely common among people reaching the age of 45. Even if it is common among people it is best to be prevented. Here are some of the ways to refocus your career when facing a midlife crisis.

  • Realise your worth – it is easy to neglect the achievements you’ve made in your career when dealing with a midlife crisis. You may begin to regret the things you did not do instead of thinking about all the good things you have accomplished. By that, you may try writing down the goals you remember from your younger self that you have attained. Having a written list of your achievements may make you realise that you have come a long way and are not worthless.
  • Review your situation – stop comparing your life with anyone else’s in their middle ages. Take a few moments to evaluate yourself and your needs. If you feel like money wasn’t the issue, you may try contemplating what career you would take or it maybe that you are dissatisfied with the salary you are receiving; whatever the reason, it is healthy to reassess your situation so you can have a better grasp of the reality you are in and what you think is best decision you should take next.
  • Ask for advice – you don’t have to go through this transition by yourself. If you want to refocus your career, try to seek advice from people who have gone through your experience. They may be able to give you a different insight on your career that could lead you closer to where you really desire. A life coach or a therapist can also offer assistance to help you too.
