Tips For First Time Event Hosts

The key to successful event hosting is giving guests a takeaway they’ll cherish for years to come. Once you have the music, the food, drinks and schedule planned, it is important to look at the gift bags and the memories that people will take away from the event.  The better they remember it, the more likely they are to book you for future events. Afterall, everyone has a birthday, most people have other important events in their life.

If you are a first time event host, we are sure that you’ve been searching for tips on how to make your first gig successful. Well, there are a lot of things to remember but in this article, we’ll only highlight the top three things to keep in mind once you hold that mic and welcome the guests.

Tip1. Recognise who’s your audience. Knowing who is going to show up to your event, in whatever form it takes, is the first step to making it a success. If you’re advertising a conference for a company you probably don’t want to do so to an audience composed of children. Hence, you can tailor content to the event’s audience by identifying them in advance.

Tip 2. Host with intention. An event can be better organised if a specific goal is set. The goal may have been to sway audience members to support a proposed organisational shift. It’s wonderful to even have a more straightforward goal before you start an event so you’ll know the flow of your script.

Tip 3. The event’s emcee (MC) will be in charge of everything that happens there. If you are the MC, you will be in charge of the event’s flow by virtue of your presence on stage, even if a stage manager is present to help manage the schedule. Ensure you’re always on top of your time. If one section runs long, see if you can make up for it by shortening programs. You can extend the next segment if the first one is cut off prematurely. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to keep the event’s beginning and end on schedule.

Hosting an event is a fulfilling side hustle if you’re into public speaking. You can start freelancing for small birthday parties until you build your portfolio. As the world shifts back to normal, we can probably expect a lot of physical events, networking and award ceremonies and to come.
