To do list after buying your new home

It is an exciting time in your life, your first home, or your next new home. Moving house is a fresh start, a new opportunity for a new life and to start over again. Leave the old mistakes behind, and move forwards. You’ve just become a homeowner!

But what comes next? You have signed contracts, got the keys, thought about furniture and carpets and what will go in the garden? Your real estate agent and mortgage broker have probably been supportive of you throughout the process. This is likely, so they get paid!  However, if this is your first time purchasing a property, you may be unsure of what to expect next.

There’s a lot to tick off your new property agenda prior to actually moving in, from fitting the internet to what colour pillowcases and pots, pans and plates! Move-in day can be a nightmare if you don’t stay on track. We’ve put together a list of chores you can do to make the transition smoother.

To do list after buying your new home:

  • Obtain a Home Warranty; You may have bought a home warranty before selling your home. But for those who aren’t aware of this, a home warranty is an excellent method to preserve your new acquisition while also potentially saving you money down the road.
  • Make sure you know where the main water shutoff valve is in your home in case you ever need to turn it off completely. Almost all residences have two main shutdown valves, one before and one after the water meter. The location of the meter varies depending on the climate in your region. In addition, locate the electrical panel so that you can turn off the electricity to your entire property or a specific circuit if necessary.
  • Arrange a Deep Cleaning for your home because it is likely that the previous occupant didn’t do a thorough cleaning job. Prior to packing up your belongings, spend some time cleaning the entire property. It’s often a good idea to hire a professional to cleanse the ventilation duct, especially if the old owner had pets in the property.
  • Walk around in silence, get to know the place and the feels and which floorboards squeak. This is your new place, and the sooner it can feel like home, the more settled you will be.

This is all for now. So if you finally got the keys to your new home, ensure to get a decent night’s rest in the evening before you relocate. There is a bunch of work to be done in the moving day and it would require a great amount of energy.
