Fruit-Picking Gig For First Time?

What was your first job?

Many people started work in the summertime, it could have been on a farm, or doing the local newspaper round. With the recent departure of a lot of foreign workers from the UK, there are several opportunities for this type of work again.  With the rising costs of living, increased costs of rent, and opportunities like this in the Gig Economy, it could be a good match for you. Reaching out to your local farmer could put some ezra pounds in your pocket to cover costs, and support your local community at the same time.

British farmers are having trouble finding enough harvest workers as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the impending impacts of Brexit.  However, this presents a chance for folks who wish to enjoy the outdoors while earning a little additional funds.

Many different types of work are available on British farms, from operating a forklift to tending plants. If you’re looking for fruit-picking jobs in the UK, you’ve got so much opportunity at the moment to catch a tan, pick some fruit and get paid for it too.

What is the seasonality of Fruit Picking jobs?

Various fruits and vegetables are in season at certain periods of the year. It’s impossible to predict exactly when the fruit-picking season will start, although typically it’s anywhere between the middle of March to the end of April. Yet, now is the season when additional possibilities to work on local farms harvesting vegetables and fruits become available. Farmers are often pressed for time as well, since if their crop is not gathered soon, part of the yield would go to waste.

How can I get a fruit-picking job?

Physical strength and desire to work outdoors are important for seasonal fruit picking jobs. Most fruit farms do not demand special academic requirements for pickers. But, the majority of employers would rather choose people who have prior experiences harvesting and managing certain kinds of fruit.

What should you pack for your first Fruit-Picking job?

Pack your things in a hands-free backpack when you go. To protect yourself and your companions from insects, bring natural insect repellent, gloves, boots, and long socks. Also, don’t forget to pack some organic sunscreen, stainless steel water bottles, and plenty of water.

If heavy labour isn’t your thing, there are several different tasks related to fruit picking. Some of these tasks include inspecting and measuring the fruit, creating jam, packaging and labelling the fruit, and distributing the fruit in the farm store.

Once the fruit is picked and packed, it needs to go off to the shops, or the local markets for sale. If you don’t fancy standing in a field doing the picking, driving it around and selling it in the markets might be an opportunity to enhance your sales and customer service skills.  There are several skills that can be learned in the fruit picking industry, and any job outside where you get paid to get a tan is a bonus these days!
