How to Reject a Client for Freelancer

So many freelancers are magpies. They see a new shiny object that they simply must have, must be involved in and find benefits in being a part of. It is hard to say no.

As a freelancer, you are likely to face a scenario in which you will have to turn down a project. Being able to work with whomever, on whatever, and when you choose is at the heart of the freelancer lifestyle. If a freelancer wants to make the most of their independence, they need to master the art of politely declining work when it’s appropriate. However, declining a proposal is not a simple process! Even while it may seem counter-intuitive, knowing how to say “no” could be the best effective approach to expand your business.

Step 1: Be kind.

The chance is still there, even if you’re not going to take it, therefore you should still be grateful. Taking into consideration how much time and effort the customer has put into learning about your abilities, you should return the favor. Remember that this may be your first engagement with the client, and the tone of the interaction or email will affect your entire relationship. If this opportunity is not right for you at this time, they are likely to have other opportunities in the future.

Step 2: Explain yourself.

When you have to tell a customer no, politeness requires that you explain why. An explanation of why you’re rejecting a client’s request might help them accept your no, making it simpler for them to say yes. Or they will remember you next time, and ask again. Be ready to explain why you can’t take the chance so they don’t feel confused, surprised, or tricked.

Step 3: Recommend Others

If you appreciate the project but not the timetable or money, suggest it to someone else. There are many skilled freelancers you may suggest clients to in this case. Even while it is ultimately up to them to establish the connection, at least they may take comfort in the fact that you are not a setback for them. Alternatively, you may suggest an already-existing service or solution to your potential client. This is better handled when the client does not have a big budget, you do not have time, or there is a means to meet their requirements without your expertise.
